A quick check for the rear brake shoe contact area

A quick check for the rear brake shoe contact area

Vehicles Involved:

Vehicles equipped with rear drum brakes.

Condition:

An appearance that the rear drum brake shoes are not making the proper shoe-to-drum contact.

Repair Procedure:

To determine the brake shoe to drum contact area, the following test may be performed.

Remove, inspect and measure the brake drum.

Verify that the drum is of sound integrity. With a permanent marking pen draw a series of “X’s” across the face of the friction material on both shoes.

Do this on both sides of the vehicle.

Next, take the vehicle for a test drive and perform a series of stops in a normal manner.

Re-inspect the rear linings. You will be able to clearly see by any remaining “X’s” or black markings where the linings are contacting the brake drum.

This quick check will assist you in checking if a wheel cylinder is sticking under light pedal pressure,

if the shoes are sticking on the mounting pads of the backing plate or if other problems are present that are preventing equal side-to-side and front-to-rear shoe contact.
