Why don’t petrol and diesel cars use lithium-ion batteries?

The Lithium-Ion battery is a rechargeable battery, known as the Li-ion.

It contains lithium ions. 

During discharge, these move from the anode to the cathode.

It moves from cathode to anode, during charge.

There are various types of Lithium-Ion batteries with different rates of cathodes made from other lithium compounds and carbon-based Anodes.

An electric current is produced by the chemical reaction between anode, cathode, and electrolyte.

Why not using lithium-ion batteries for petrol and diesel cars?

The different types of Li-ion batteries didn’t make it into the automotive sector.

Those continue to be found in popular consumer electronic products, including smartphones and laptops.

The question occurs when one looks at using these for diesel or petrol vehicles.

The Li-ion battery needs an onboard circuit to control and ensure that the voltage and current are within the safety limits and boost costs.

The lead-acid battery provides a safe and less costly alternative for the car owners.

Sensitive To High Temperature

Li-Ion motor batteries are overheated.

The overheating of the device or overcharging of the battery generally leads to more heat.

Battery cells can degenerate faster than normal due to heat.

If you drive in an arid environment, then it would make more sense to have a lead-acid battery.

Safety Concerns

The chances of Li-ion battery exploding due to overheat or overcharge are always high.

The decomposition of electrolytes leads to the formation of gases. The electrolyte can be ignited and it can trigger a fire.

It makes carrying the batteries, particularly when shipping in larger quantities, a huge risk for you.

You wouldn’t risk putting a car battery in the vehicle that has a high chance of explosion.
